who can claim

The grant is available to anyone purchasing a qualifying new electric car, including self-employed electricians, contractors, small businesses, and everyday drivers.

The Electric Car Grant is split into two tiers based on how environmentally friendly the vehicle is:

  • Band 1: £3750 discount available for electric vehicles with low carbon emissions and strong sustainability standards.
  • Band 2: £1500 discount available for electrical vehicles that don’t meet band one requirements.

Which EVs qualify?

Only models approved under strict environmental and pricing criteria are eligible. This ensures high sustainability standards are met.

  • Dacia Spring: One of the UK’s most affordable EVs
  • Citroën e-C3: Compact, practical, and ideal for urban driving
  • Kia EV3: Packed with features at a competitive price
  • Mini Cooper Electric: A stylish city EV with eco upgrades
  • Renault 5: A modern reboot of a classic, designed with sustainability in mind
  • Expect 50+ models to qualify over time

This means only EVs that are affordable, efficient, and environmentally responsible make the cut. The Government’s goal is to encourage the uptake of cleaner vehicles that are also accessible to a wider range of drivers.

How to claim

Car manufacturers apply to have their models approved for the grant by meeting government criteria around pricing and sustainability. Once approved, dealerships apply the discount directly at the point of sale, meaning the price you see already includes the grant where applicable.

  • Choose an eligible EV
  • Purchase or lease through a dealer
  • Get the discount applied at point of sale

A growing number of dealerships are already signed up to the scheme, and more are expected to join as the initiative continues to roll out.
